October: Bring Light to Someone

Inspired by Diwali

There’s something lovely about watching a room brighten, one little light at a time.

This October, inspired by Diwali, let’s carry that feeling into our everyday lives. A thoughtful gesture can make someone’s day feel a little brighter, too.

learn & recite

तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय ।
Tamaso ma jyotir gamaya.

“Lead me from darkness to light.”

This prayer from the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, 1.3.28 expresses a longing to move from darkness toward light.

Let it inspire a moment of reflection: “Where could I bring more understanding, hope, or kindness today?”

your affirmation

“I can bring a little light through thoughtful actions.”

Say it after the Sanskrit, and think of someone who could use a little encouragement.

try this: a quiet kindness mission

Choose someone whose day you could make a little easier or brighter. Then do one thoughtful thing for them:

  • Take a task off their plate.
  • Drop off a favorite snack with a kind note.
  • Invite them for a walk and give them your full attention.
  • Send a specific message of appreciation.

Let their needs guide your choice. Keep it simple enough to do this week, and enjoy giving without expecting anything in return.

Trying this as a family? Choose a mission together and give everyone a role. Someone can write the note, someone can help deliver it, and someone will undoubtedly volunteer to taste-test the snacks.

a little light, every day

Recite the Sanskrit, repeat your affirmation, and ask:

“Whose day could I make a little brighter?”

Look for a small opportunity, then act on it.

At the end of the month, reflect: “What did I notice when I made kindness a habit?”

You may never know how far a thoughtful gesture travels. It’s still worth sending.
