August: Make a Promise of Care

Inspired by Raksha Bandhan

“I’m here for you” is a lovely thing to hear. It becomes even lovelier when someone shows us what they mean.

This August, inspired by Raksha Bandhan, let’s celebrate our bonds with a small promise—and a thoughtful way to keep it.

learn & recite

मैत्रः करुण एव च ।
Maitrah karuna eva cha.

“Friendly and compassionate.”

This short selection from the Bhagavad Gita, 12.13 describes qualities we can bring into our relationships: friendship and compassion.

Let it remind you that caring often begins with noticing what someone needs.

your affirmation

“I show my love through small acts of care.”

Say it after the Sanskrit, and bring someone you love to mind.

try this: tie a promise to a thread

Make a simple bracelet with thread, yarn, or ribbon. Choose someone—a sibling, friend, parent, or another person dear to you—and offer it with one specific promise:

“I’ll make time to listen.”
“I’ll check in with you each week.”
“I’ll help you with something that feels difficult.”

Choose something small enough to keep. Ask what would feel helpful to them, too.

Trying this as a family? Exchange bracelets and promises with one another. “I’ll ask before borrowing your things” may bring considerable peace to the household.

a little care, every day

Recite the Sanskrit, repeat your affirmation, and ask:

“How can I help someone feel cared for today?”

Listen, lend a hand, or follow through on your promise. Let the bracelet be a gentle reminder.

At the end of the month, reflect together: “Which small acts made us feel closer?”

The thread may loosen. The habit of showing up for each other can keep growing.

how did this month’s reflection feel for you?

We’d love to hear what you tried, what surprised you, or what you’re still figuring out. Whether it sparked a quiet moment or a lively family conversation, your experience is welcome here.

A few lines, a little story, or a question—we’re listening.
